Dog Agility - Training for Fun & Fitness

What is Dog Agility?

Dog Agility is a canine sport in which the dog has to negotiate a variety of obstacles laid out in a course. The handler runs much of the course with the dog, guiding them in the right direction and over each obstacle. Each course consists of up to 20 different obstacles which can be adjusted according to the dog’s size. Many people attracted to dog agility never take up the sport because it is a common misconception that Agility is suitable only for highly trained, large, athletic dogs. This is not true and agility is a fun sport that can be enjoyed by dogs of all shapes and sizes.

Why come to Dog Agility training?

Agility has so many positive benefits for you and your dog. Here are my top 6 reasons to get involved:

  1. It can strengthen the relationship between you and your dogs
  2. It can improve obedience in your dogs
  3. It will teach you some dog handling skills that will help you in everyday life
  4. It is great exercise for humans and canines
  5. Both adults and children can get involved
  6. It is something you cannot learn from an IPAD or Computer!

    How do we train?

We gently introduce both dogs and handlers to pre-agility equipment which is safe and non-scary to the dogs. Not all dogs learn at the same speed so there is no pressure on either the dog or the handler. Once the dogs and handlers have spent a minimum of 6 weeks on the pre-agility equipment we gradually move onto the full size equipment.

The training methods used focuses on reward based training or what scientists call Operant Conditioning where positive reinforcement through treats and toys teaches the dogs the skills they need to work on the agility equipment. As well as teaching the dogs, the human handlers are also taught the correct agility techniques to enable handlers to compete in agility competitions should they wish to do so. However the focus of these classes is primarily on fun and enjoyment.

Class sizes are kept on average to between 6-8 dogs so that everyone gets as much opportunity to learn and train as possible.  1 to 1 sessions can also be arranged by appointment

We are located at: Woodhatch, Redhill, Surrey
