Agility Frequently Asked Questions?

Q? Can any breed of dog come to Dog Agility classes?

Most breeds will be fine doing agility however it is not recommended for "long backed" dogs for example Dachshunds and Basset hounds as they may not be able to cope with jumping and the higher equipment. These classes are not suitable for young puppies or dogs under 6 months.

Q? What equipment do I need for Dog Agility?

You will need the following bits & pieces:

  • A soft collar for your dog, No Choke chains please.
  • A lead which you can easily clip and un-clip
  • Sensible shoes for the humans, no wellington boots as they are difficult to run in and you may trip up
  • Coats that will zip-up, as flapping clothes can frighten some dogs
  • You would need to bring "high value" training treats or toys to use as rewards during training.

Q? What is a "High Value" treat or toy?

This is a training treat or toy which your dog absolutely loves! The idea is to use this treat or toy only during training sessions as a positive reward when they learn correctly. Once the dog associates getting it right with earning the toy or treat your dog should be happy to work for the reward. Examples of "High Value" treats and toys are:

  • Cheese
  • Smoked sausage
  • Chicken
  • Liver cake
  • Tuggy toys (These work well with terriers!)
  • Balls
  • Squeaky toys

Q? Are there any pre-requisites for dog agility?

Your will ideally need a basic obedience level with your dog to get the best out of dog agility classes and to be in control of your dog. This needs to include:

  • Your dog will need to come when called - E.g. Recall command
  • Your dog will need to Sit and Stay ideally- however we can help with this!
  • Your dog will eventually need to work "off lead" , although for beginners a long lead can be used in the classes
  • Your dog will need to be at least 6 months old

Q? What age dogs can come to dog agility classes?

These classes are not suitable for young puppies or dogs under 6 months.

We run Pre-Agility classes for total beginners which are suitable for dogs aged 6 months onwards. This involves low impact gentle training where we start to introduce the dogs and handlers to the equipment. There is no high jumping or full sized  equipment used for dogs under 12 months as young dogs can damage bones and joints through excessive exercise. Most dogs reach maturity by 12-18 months by which time joints and ligaments are fully formed.

Once the dogs are old enough and familiar with the equipment we start to move onto the full size agility equipment.

If you have any concerns about the fitness of your dogs please visit your vet before coming to classes.
